Character Crush

15 posts in this topic

I thought it would be really interesting and fun to learn about the type of person we're each attracted to by sharing our character crushes. This is different from celebrity crush - no vanity or superficiality allowed here!

Give us an idea of the type of person you're attracted to by providing a recognizable example. It could be a character in a film or a tv show.

The idea is that it's not based on the real-life actor but the character he/she plays in the film or show. E.g. A character where you were attracted to him/her as a partner based on a particular characteristic or attitude or behaviour or demeanor or personality etc.

I'll go first! Mine are:

Brian Bedford (played by Dylan McDermott) - Miracle on 34th street

Jeff Daly (played by Mark Ruffalo) - Rumour has it

Matthew Crawley (played by Dan Stevens) - Downton Abbey

Paul Sutton (played by Keanu Reeves) - A walk in the clouds

Fritz Howard (played by Jon Tenney) - The Closer

Joel Graham (played by Sam Jaeger) - Parenthood Series

So do you have any character crushes? Share them if you do and what it is about their character that attracts or intrigues you.

This is pretty tough. Men don't really fantasize about celebrities in the same way women do so I really had to think to pull out characters. I like westerns too so women are pretty much non existent in them. Here:

Carla Jean Moss- No Country for Old Men

Granny - Beverly Hillbillies

Molly Stark - The Virginian (book, I have not seen the movie)

I'll have to think about more later.

Thanks for the insight, Amarillo, I didn't think about how the genders might differ in how they fantasize.

Maybe men fantasize more about beauty in a woman and girls fantasize about romantic situations and loving interactions.

But thanks for your effort! I'm going to google those characters now and learn about them (no, I have nothing better to do with my time :P )

Yes and no.

First I don't really care for actors/actresses. I don't have crushes on any of them. As a rule I don't care for them. This entire obsession people have for these people, the obsession with the gossip, who is dating who, who married and divorced who, who is in rehab for the 10th time, what did this actor/actress wear to an award show, what so and so said about politics. I couldn't care less.

As a rule I don't respect what they do. I respected it more as a rule with Classic Films when there used to be a few more moral standards. Now a days when I watch a film whenever they do something risqué I look at it literally. A person is being paid to make out with someone else and is doing that or doing a sex scene or posing nude or dressing scantily to titillate the audience for money. Someone's spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is now passionately making out with someone who is not their spouse or doing a sex scene with someone not their spouse for money as part of a job. I just don't respect it. I don't idolize actors and actresses I look at them as someone I'd never date. Now that movies standards require that to be "real" we literally have to see EVERYTHING I don't respect them. If you've ever seen Gone With The Wind Clark Gabel carries Vivien Leigh up the stairs and carries her into the bedroom and the door closes. That's it. That's the way the subject was handled.  That I can respect. I have no problem with that. Today however, we'd have to see them passionately pawing each other, their hands running all over each other, they'd have to be giving each other wet, tongue filled, open mouth kisses, they'd be pulling each others clothes off of each other as they fall into bed and we may or may not see them naked, rubbing and caressing each other. I can never get past the part of thinking are they an actor or a soft core porn star? I guess I'd respect them more if they just stayed single but many of them have spouses and to me that doesn't seem like a "job" but unfaithfulness to their spouse. I don't have to watch the female actress shower to understand people do take showers. I like films and movies, they are fun to watch but I don't really respect actors nor do I like them or idolize them. 99% of films would be just as good if they would just leave these types of scenes out.

So, now that my little rant is over and I've expressed how I don't have crushes on any actors or actresses and, deep down, I don't care for them at all. Many of them that is, can I lose myself in a character and envision how sweet or romantic it would be if a certain "character" in a film were a real life person and if I knew such a "character" in real life I'd find it great? Sure. Actually there are probably lots of them but unfortunately my memory is failing me and I can't really recall very many even though I know there are lots.

Off the top of my head these are the only ones I can think of. In the movie Lars and the Real Girl there is a character named Margo who sweetly has feelings for Lars throughout the film while he is having his delusion with his made up girlfriend. She is so sweet and kind to him all throughout that I thought someone like that would be great to know in real life.

I liked A Walk to Remember and the sick and dying character of Jamie Sullivan and I think I'd probably fall for her too if she were a real person.

I'm sure there are lots of others I just can't remember them.

I have quite a few crushes on characters. Most of them are intelligent, and tall and slender in looks.

Sherlock. Don't get me wrong, I think the current Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch, is very handsome and I like what I've read about his views, but all of that aside. The character of Sherlock, both on screen and books is, in my opinion, amazing.

Dr Spencer Reid, Criminal Minds. I love him. I am one of those weird people who could listen to someone like him all of the time. He's also sweet, and kind of bubbling and shy. Actually, if I could meet a guy like him who could love someone who loves to learn but only has an average IQ? That would be awesome.

Mac Taylor, CSI:NY. Integrity, strength, calm, rational, caring, intelligent...

Jack Hodgins/Sweets/Zac, from Bones. Need I say more?

Dean Winchester, Supernatural. Yes, he's the only one who doesn't really fit. Right? Honestly, aside from the fact that he likes to just sleep with any prett girl, and he drinks a lot...I dig his sarcasm, wit, and the way he actually cares about people. I mean, he genuinely cares about women and children, and family. He sticks up for the little guy, and no matter what, he just keeps going.

I'm sure I could think of many more, but that's good for now. :)

I have always found myself attracted to a woman's character as opposed to her appearance. It could be her loyalty, her faith, her compassion or any other number of things that attract me to her but in the end there are very few that I would actually say I would want as a partner if they were real.

First and foremost I would also have to agree on Jamie Sullivan from 'A Walk To Remember'. Her faith, compassion, and intelligence are what I find attractive in her.

Another would be Katerina Stratford from '10 Things I Hate About You'. Not only is she intelligent, but she is also independent and fiesty. I know most guys wouldn't initially be attracted to her personality because she screams feminism, but when she find a guy she loves you learn she is full of compassion and kindness.

Louisa Clark from 'Me Before You' also makes my list because of her personality, her style, her ditzyness, her loyalty, her kindness, and her desire to make another person's life better.

They all differ in numerous ways and have their own characteristics that I find appealing in a partner.

I'm into girl-next-door type characters. The girl who is wholesome, down-to-earth, unassuming girl who exhibits a modest kind of beauty. She is the the kind of girl you'd be proud to bring home to meet Mom. She's the kind of girl who is always honest, sweet and can really depend on her to be there when you're in crisis mode. Basically she is the antithesis of the promiscuous kind of girl who flaunts her sexuality just to get attention.

Belle - Beauty and the Beast

Winnie Cooper - The Wonder Years

Topanga - Boy Meets World

Betty Cooper - Archie Comics

Willow - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Beth from the Walking Dead.

Claire Redfield from the Resident Evil video games.

Alice from the Resident Evil movies.

Sarah Connor from Terminator 2...

I'm sure there are about a million others... But those immediately spring to mind...

Oh yes, even I'm captivated by Belle. Are you going to watch the new movie with Emma Watson as Belle?

As well as intelligent, tall and slender, you seem to have a thing for crime-solving protagonists ^_^

I guess I do! :D My goodness, give me a man who's tall, slender, with incredible intelligence? Seriously, if a guy like that even gave me a second look I'd probably be a goner. lol. OK, well, he WOULD have to have similar beliefs to me, and be a good leader in them...but that's getting a little off topic. :)

Oh, They've listed some of my favorite characters, too. I love Beauty and the Beast...my favorite disney princes. I'm over the moon about the movie coming out. Not that you were talking to me, just that I am. :)

Topanga! She's awesome. lol That was one of my favorite shows growing up. I even quote her on most of my profiles. lol

Is water wet? ;) Of course I'm going to see it! But yes Belle is amazing. I'd argue she is the most realistic Disney princess of all.
