Alcohol/Drinking

101 posts in this topic

Looks like I'm going to have to be brutally honest about a topic that's affected my life a lot, in not so nice ways. I've never consumed any alcohol recreationally and don't plan on doing so at any time in my life, for various reasons. While depression and other such things seem to run in my family (alcoholism as well), I don't ever want to see myself going down that path, no matter how crappy life may get. The decisions of others to live in such a manner has, at times made my life and those of my family members and others I care about, frankly put, hell. While a lot of people will go on and on about how much fun getting drunk is, I've seen the dark side of that activity far too much to ever really believe them, especially since there are other ways to have fun and not be taking chances with your life, happiness, or that of others. There's also the fact that I'm a part of the Straight Edge scene/subculture and a Muslim (I try and take my faith seriously enough to put in the struggle to live it). And, yes, I know that there are 'Muslims' who drink, fornicate, etc., (heck they're the ones who tick me off the most, lol...you know who you are  *points finger at random people*), but I'd rather be real about things...if you say you believe in something, then live by it. That being said, if a girl I was interested in drank or turned out to be an alcoholic, I can honestly say I'd lose interest in her almost immediately. However, if it were something in her past and she hadn't done anything truly stupid while under the influence (i.e. slept with someone, gotten into a fight, cheated on their SO, etc.), I'd write it off as 'the past' and leave it at that. I've known enough people who made such forgivable mistakes in their past and at the same time I've know a number of 'clean' people who were totally mucked up, so I can let go of such a thing as a person having tried a little alcohol or so, as long as certain boundaries weren't breached, so to speak. Anywho...

See ya on the flipside,

That's understandable and I'd prefer a partner that didn't drink (or rarely drank) too.

I don't drink, I just don't feel a need to...My Dad used to drink whenever he was upset and seeing how it affected him made me realize there were better ways to deal with your feelings.

That, and getting smashed doesn't seem fun to me. XP

The only drink I've ever met that I enjoyied is a margarita, and that's only if it's fruit-falvored with a sugar rim. >w<

Honestly, having thought things over, I can't automatically rule out dating a girl who drank. I suppose it would have to do with how much 'into it' she was. If she was basically an addict, than I can see that causing things to end. However, if she were merely doing that on and off and had no problem with putting it aside, for herself and her own reasons, not to please me, than I'd see things as workable.

I'm 22 and I still haven't had my first real drink yet. My mom and sister are social drinkers, so I had my first sips from them this year. I don't usually do things unless the benefits outweigh the potential consequences.

Never drank and will never start

Relatives always try to get me to drink at parties or weddings but I always said no and proud that I am a non drinker and non smoker

I heard of this Straight Edge movement. What is it.

Its basically a lifestyle of abstaining from drugs, alcohol, tobacco and premarital sex.

Looks like I might be part of that group. I never heard of in England because I was raised in non smoking family. My dad used to be a light drinker at parties and weddings when I was little but now stopped due to his beer belly and the set a good example for me.

There are probably not many girls who follow the movement

Sociologists say that one reason that women have had a longer lifespan than men is because they were less likely to share in bad social behaviors such as smoking, drinking, etc. Recently, however that lifespan gap is closing in recent times because women are much more likely to take on those same bad behaviors that they used to refrain from.

The American Lung Association states that 18.3% of women in the US smoked while 23.1% of men smoked in a 2008 study. When it comes to drinking, 25.2% of women have completely abstained from drinking their entire life. While only 14.6% of men said the same according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

So, while we may be closing in the gap. Women are still more likely to abstain from these type of things.

Thank you very much @NicoleNova for the interesting figures. There may be hope me let. Like you said, there is someone out there for me. It just I see a lot more tobacco advertising and alcohol advertising in the UK. Both tobacco and alcohol advertising has been banned since 1985.

According to the Office of National Statistic in the UK, 1 in 5 adults over 18 are smokes and there has been an increase in underage drinking due to the pricing and special offers. Smoking has been unchanged since 2010 when the smoking ban was introduced.

People automatically think you are strange  because you never drank a sip of alcohol or smoked anything. I have several relatives at parties say"just one glass" but luckily I am driving so I can't drink. I never see the reason or desire to drink and live life like that.

C'mon dude. These posts about how miserable you're becoming aren't helping you. You're the only one that can change things. Get up early, do some pushups/situps, and apply for jobs like a maniac.

It’s not fun for everyone else, there are people who are way worse off than you are and don’t complain as much.

Have you ever considered trying to fix things yourself? In a month and a half you have posted almost 3 times what I have in more than half a year. From your posts and your activity on this site I can deduce that you are always online, or gaming, or doing something less then conducive to fixing this situation of yours.

Another tip, no one really cares if you watch porn. Most people on this site will tell you it's bad, most guys you meet will tell you it's fine. The only people who care if you watch porn are the ladies, and that's a fixable problem to them if it's a problem at all (some don't mind). Just watch it or don't watch it. Stop going on about how you prefer amateurs one moment, only to tell everyone about how you've cut back the next and won't be watching in anymore in the next post.

And that is why you will not be posting here anymore. Goodbye and don't let the door hit you on your way out.
