An awful sign of the times...

10 posts in this topic

Hey, guys!

So, I just saw this bit of news on the internet. Well, this just about sums up the tragic state the modern world is in...

http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/fifty-shades-grey-replaces-bible-british-hotel/story?id=16853389#.UBb_jrR8ATa

Are hotel guests more interested in reading "50 Shades of Grey" than the Bible?

One British hotelier thinks so. And that's why, even though he says he's never read E L James' best-selling novel himself, Jonathan Denby has decided to remove all the Gideon Bibles from his hotel's 40 rooms and replace them with the book that's been dubbed "mommy porn."

Well, I guess this is the same world in which some high schools won't give out the Bible in case they offend people, but they will hand out contraceptives. No wonder waiting till marriage is so difficult nowadays...

Wow! Really?!?! I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that if he knew what was in that book and what it was about, he couldn't possible still want to put it in his hotel rooms in place of the bible. I wonder what people will say and how they will react when they see that....

ohh he knew exactly what he was doing - and I bet his hotel is completely booked for the next year due to that publicity.

I'll be a teacher, hopefully in a public school and I want all of my students to feel comfortable. I also want them to learn about different religions in history classes. I believe parents should pass down their religious (or non-religious) practices to their children. I also think it is important for students to be exposed to backgrounds other than their own. Like if I raise my children Catholic, I do not want them going to a Catholic school. I would still want them to go to Religious Education at our church, and hopefully choose to go to a Bible Study when they're in high school and college.

Is this a Christian hotel or something? because there are bibles in the rooms? I didn't know Christian hotels existed. Although I am most likely wrong because no way would a Christian hotel put something as vile as 50 Shades of Grey in a hotel room.

No, it's just that there's a society called Gideons International, who basically give free bibles to organisations like schools, hospitals, prisons, and so on. They're probably most famous for distributing bibles to hotels, so every hotel room can have a bible in it, in case travellers are ever in need of them. Obviously, the hotels don't have to take them, but many do, since some people do like having a bible to read in their room, and they're free. It sounds as though the hotel here had previously accepted the bibles for their rooms, but then decided to replace them...

Actually, I just realised...That's even worse than I first thought, This hotel accepted bibles from an evangelical Christian charity organisation, who basically asked them, "Would you please put these free bibles (which we've paid for) in your hotel room in case people want a copy to read?", and this hotel has accepted these bibles, agreeing to do so, and then they've replaced them with porn! That is extremely low...

Yeah there's a guy who goes to my church who is a Gideon. He travels all over giving Bibles to people. Devotes a large part of his life to it it's very noble.

There were guys that passed those out around campus...I know they had good intentions, but maybe a little different way would be better...

Wow, I had no idea. Do all hotels have free bibles? I've stayed in hotels hundreds of times (mainly in America) and I don't think I've seen one. And I agree; that is very rude and ungrateful of the hotel to do that.
