How is everyone's summer?

8 posts in this topic

Hey, Flowerbee!

Well, my summer's been great! I'm back at school next week, but I'm actually looking forward to it a little, since I'll see all my friends again, and because I got all the qualifications I needed this year, I don't really need to worry about my exams. I'll just be studying for myself, I guess. Plus, I'll have lots of free periods to sit and talk to my friends!

So, this summer, I went on a six-day trip to Paris with my choir! We visited the Eiffel Tower, Disneyland, took a boat trip down the Seine, and stopped at Belgium on the way there and back. We performed everyday, including on stage at Disneyland Paris, and on the ferry there. In short, I had a great time! Yay!

Ah, one thing that has been majorly stressing me out... planning for college applications this fall. :( I thought I had it all figured out, but now I’m not even sure about where I want to go anymore. There's just way too many options. I also have to take the ACT soon. Even though I've studied like mad for months, I'm sooooo nervous about it. My mom tells me not to worry, but I feel like it's a life or death thing.

D00d, for real, don't stress about the ACT. If you've studied at all, you're going to be great! :D It's really not hard, at least I never thought it was, and I barely even bothered to study for it. Just the math part, because I stink at that, and I got an awesome score.

And you know, the thing about picking a school is just remind yourself that you could always transfer. Do you know what you want to study?

Oh and my summer is going quite well. I just had my tonsils out about a week ago so I've spent the last week sitting on the couch watching movies...but I finally am beginning to feel much better!

My summer has been both busy and stressful. I've been working part time trying to pay bills while looking for full time work, registering for classes, and keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to stay enrolled in those classes. I think may be due for a hike or some sort of weekend trip.

My summer hasn't been too bad, though I'm kind of ready to go back to school.. I miss my friends and the city (Minneapolis! much more exciting than home in Iowa..) :)

The worst part of this summer was that my grandmother passed away at the end of June.. shes been fighting cancer for the past several years so we all knew it was coming. She especially went downhill fast since January (January she was driving and still looked okay) but then the cancer spread to her brain and that was kind of it.. it was so hard to see her suffering and going through so much that having her finally not be in pain anymore is kind of a relief. I am also very glad it was during the summer instead of when I was at school.. dealing with the stress of 19 credits along with worrying a lot about my grandparents (my grandpa isn't doing so great either..) I was incredibly stressed over my grandmother possibly passing when I still had school stuff to worry about.

Aside from that, I haven't done a lot this summer, kind of just relaxing. Working but only like 10-15 hours a week if that because my job is stupid (cashier at a grocery store.. I think they have too many people so everyone wants more hours) and also spending time with my boyfriend :) We go to college 3.5 hours drive apart so only get to see each other every 3-4 weeks during school.. but 3-4 times a week in the summer so we have to take advantage of the fact we are both home :)

@Flowerbee: Picking colleges are fun! Though for me it was also VERY stressful.. I am a music major so I not only had to do the normal application thing but also audition for schools. My first choice school (where I am at!) didn't notify me about whether my audition was accepted or not until nearly the end of April before the fall I started.. don't feel rushed to get everything figured out right away, you have time to decide! :) Hopefully you wont be forced to wait to decide like I was though :)

And try not to worry about the ACT too much :) You can also retake it if you don't like your first score! I did not like my first score at all, so retook it and it improved 6 points which is huge! I feel the proctor as well as the seating placement was a big factor.. i couldn't really even lean over at all without hitting the person next to me the first time, and the proctor acted as if she hated everyone in there. The second time I took it we were much more adequately spaced and the person was very nice and seemed to truly want us to all do well. A MUCH better testing environment!

You are also lucky your prospective major is virtually at every school.. makes things easier :) I am doing music therapy which is not very common (only offered at 2 schools in my state.. which is why i'm chose an out of state university) and i ended up visiting 10 or 11 different schools total.. i don't even remember :P

Don't feel rushed to make a decision right away and have fun! Its a long process but so exciting! And college is great! :)

Good luck!

My summer has seriously flown by! I have no idea what has happened to it!

I spent June and July socialising going to a lot of 18th birthdays, shopping with friends etc. then I went on a youth pilgrimage to Lourdes in France for a week to look after elderly, sick and disabled people which was just amazing. I did it last year as well and although you get no sleep, you hardly eat and you are constantly working it's the best experience. I got to look after loads of really interesting people and one who sticks in my mind all the time was a young woman called Jane and she had the early onsets of parkinson's disease so she was only just losing her speech and couldn't feed herself but she NEVER stopped smiling. She was really bubbly and happy all the time and it really puts things in perspective for you. As long as you are happy nothing else really matters and you never know how your future will turn out so make the most of every day you have. If it's meant to be it will happen. Que sera, sera!

It helped me stop complaining about really meaningless things for a while because compared to some people there, my life is fine.

When I got back from there I slept for about a week and then went away to the lake district and went on lots of walks, kayaked, went on a boat trip but the trip got cut short because my granddad went into hospital and it isn't looking good so I know exactly how you feel arabians270.

I'm also super stressed about exam results on thursday. I'll find out if I've been accepted into my favourite university or not so I'm just dreading it. But I did pass my driving test this summer and hopefully I'll be getting a car this week or next! :D

That's about all thats happened to me this summer!

I feel your pain. People always ask me "How's school?" and I want to say "Classes are great. It's the two months of ulcer-inducing bureaucracy leading up to them that's going to put me in an early grave."

You can say that again.

This summer just keeps getting better <_< . I won't have a job in two more weeks due to low enrollment. Every single interview I've gone on I've come in number two. So no job means, I'll have to pull out of summer semester, and it also most likely means I won't be able to visit my grandmother in October. She's sick with dementia, and I don't know how much longer she'll be around. To top it all off, my car decided she no longer wants to work. I think I'm done with my pity party now. I honestly can't wait for summer to be over, not that the change of season will make anything better.
